Take a Simple Drive to a Healthier Life

Book Description:
Simple Drive to a Healthier Life book
“You don’t know what you have until it’s gone”. This saying is especially true for your health.  Random luck plays a large role, but you can make your own luck as well.

With over 25 years of experience in family medical practice, Dr. Roger Smith has seen many telling examples of this.

Just as you need to provide sufficient care for your car to keep it running well, your own personal vehicle (your body) is no different. If you neglect to service your car or ignore warning signs of trouble, you risk a major breakdown. Neglecting your car may be expensive, but at least it’s replaceable. Unlike your body – where it’s not so easy to undo years of neglect.

But with the right attention and personal effort, you will be able to perform a skilful U-turn and your health may improve dramatically.

So come along for a simple drive to a healthier life, and live longer too!

Project: Take a Simple Drive to a Healthier Life by Dr Smith

This project is a good example of what full-service publishing support looks like in practice. Dr Roger Smith — a practising medical doctor — brought client data, research and a clear message to share humorously, but navigating the business of publishing was unfamiliar territory. A collaborative working relationship makes all the difference.

The project encompassed a light structural edit to sharpen the flow of ideas, followed by a thorough copyedit to ensure the writing was crisp, credible, and accessible to a general readership. Book design, cover design, and coordination of both stock photography and original artwork were all handled as part of the package — pulling together the visual language that gives a lifestyle book its appeal and authority on the shelf.

With the interior and cover files production-ready, the book was uploaded to a print-on-demand platform. Because Dr Smith’s time and focus were on his clinical work, he also relied on my guidance through the publishing administration side of things — including ISBN registration, metadata preparation, and legal deposit requirements — elements that are easy to overlook but essential for a book to be properly catalogued, distributed, and discoverable.

The result is a polished, professionally produced book that Dr Smith owns outright and that represents his expertise with the authority it deserves.

Publishing Process for Lifestyle and Self-Development Books

Publishing a nonfiction book in the lifestyle or self-development space involves more moving parts than most authors expect. Here is a plain-English overview of the key stages — and where I can help.

ISBN Registration and CiP Entry Every published book needs an ISBN — its unique identifier in the global bookselling system. Registering through Thorpe-Bowker (the Australian ISBN agency) also generates the barcode for the back cover and creates a Cataloguing in Publication (CiP) entry. This entry lists the book and all its formats in the national Books in Print database and ensures it is correctly catalogued in the National Library of Australia. Getting this right from the start means booksellers, libraries, and online retailers can find and list your title.

Legal Deposit. Once printed, copies of the book are required by law to be lodged with the National Library of Australia and the relevant State library. This is how your book enters the permanent national record. I walk authors through exactly what is required and when.

Platform Selection and Upload. For print-on-demand and ebook distribution, IngramSpark is the platform of choice for authors who want broad trade distribution — reaching bookshops, libraries, and online retailers worldwide. The upload process involves preparing files to exact specifications, setting trim sizes, assigning metadata, and ordering a physical proof before the title goes live. Each of these steps matters the final discoverability.

ePub Conversion. Many authors want both a print edition and an ebook. An ePub file — the standard format for most ebook retailers — needs to be carefully made from the final manuscript, with proper chapter structure, metadata, and formatting that renders cleanly across devices.

Metadata and Commercial Visibility. A book’s metadata — its title, subtitle, author name, description, categories, and keywords — determines how easily readers can find it. Writing a strong back-cover blurb and selecting the right BISAC categories are small decisions with a significant impact on discoverability. For authors with a broader platform, support is also available for setting up an Amazon Author Central page and preparing a media kit for launch.

Print Proofing. Before a title goes on sale, ordering a physical proof copy is essential. Colours, margins, paper weight, and cover finish all look different on screen from how they read in print. A proof check catches any issues while there is still time to correct them — and it gives the author the satisfaction of holding their finished book in their hands before it reaches readers.
